Understanding Your Experience
What Is OCD?
OCD is not about being neat or organized — it is a condition that traps you in an exhausting cycle of unwanted, intrusive thoughts and the rituals you perform to try to make them go away. The thoughts (obsessions) feel disturbing, irrational, or frightening, and no matter how many times you try to push them away, they keep coming back. The behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) provide temporary relief, but that relief never lasts, and the cycle starts all over again. OCD can center around almost any theme — contamination, harm, relationships, morality, symmetry, or anything else your brain decides to latch onto. It can consume hours of your day, interfere with your work and relationships, and make you question your own character. If you are living with OCD, you already know how exhausting it is. The good news is that OCD responds remarkably well to the right kind of therapy. You do not have to keep white-knuckling your way through every day.
Recognizing the Signs
Common Signs & Symptoms
You might recognize some of these experiences in yourself. Every person is different, and you do not need to relate to every item on this list to benefit from support.
- Intrusive, unwanted thoughts or images that cause significant distress and feel impossible to control
- Repetitive behaviors you feel compelled to perform — checking, counting, washing, arranging, or tapping
- Mental rituals like silently praying, repeating phrases, or mentally reviewing events over and over
- A persistent fear of contamination, illness, or harming someone you love
- A nagging feeling that things need to be 'just right' before you can move on
- Avoiding certain people, places, or activities because they trigger obsessive thoughts
- Spending significant time each day on obsessions and compulsions — often more than an hour
- Knowing your fears are irrational but feeling unable to stop the cycle
The Path Forward
How Therapy Helps
The gold standard treatment for OCD is ERP — Exposure and Response Prevention. In ERP, you work with your therapist to gradually face the situations and thoughts that trigger your OCD while learning to resist the urge to perform compulsions. This might sound frightening, but it is done at a pace you control, and your therapist will be right there with you every step of the way. Over time, your brain learns that the anxiety decreases on its own without the ritual, and the obsessive thoughts lose their power. Many people experience life-changing relief through ERP, often within a few months of consistent work.
Evidence-Based Care
Our Treatment Approach
ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) is the cornerstone of our OCD treatment and is considered the most effective therapy for this condition. We combine ERP with elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you build a new relationship with intrusive thoughts — learning to notice them without engaging or performing rituals. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps you understand the thinking traps that fuel OCD. Mindfulness-based approaches support you in developing a more accepting, less reactive stance toward uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.
