Taking the first step toward getting help is one of the bravest things you can do. Our compassionate team is here to walk alongside you with expertise, patience, and genuine care.

Understanding Your Experience

What Is Perinatal / Postpartum Mental Health?

Becoming a parent is supposed to be one of the happiest times of your life — at least, that is what everyone tells you. But the reality is far more complicated. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders affect up to 1 in 5 birthing parents and are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth. They can emerge during pregnancy or anytime in the first year postpartum, and they go far beyond the 'baby blues.' You might feel persistently sad, anxious, or irritable. You might be tormented by frightening intrusive thoughts about your baby's safety. You might feel disconnected from your baby, your partner, or yourself. You might feel like you are failing at the one thing everyone says should come naturally. None of this means you are a bad parent. It means you are dealing with a medical condition that is incredibly common, deeply treatable, and absolutely not your fault. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness — it is one of the strongest things you can do for yourself and your family.

Recognizing the Signs

Common Signs & Symptoms

You might recognize some of these experiences in yourself. Every person is different, and you do not need to relate to every item on this list to benefit from support.

  • Persistent sadness, anxiety, or mood swings that go beyond typical 'baby blues' and last more than two weeks
  • Difficulty bonding with your baby or feeling emotionally disconnected from them
  • Frightening, intrusive thoughts about your baby's safety that you cannot shake
  • Overwhelming guilt, shame, or feelings of inadequacy as a parent
  • Withdrawing from your partner, family, or friends
  • Difficulty sleeping even when your baby is sleeping, or sleeping excessively
  • Rage, irritability, or emotional reactivity that feels out of character
  • Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or feeling numb and going through the motions
  • In severe cases, confusion, disorientation, paranoia, or thoughts of self-harm

The Path Forward

How Therapy Helps

Perinatal therapy provides a safe, judgment-free space where you can be completely honest about what you are experiencing — even the feelings you are afraid to say out loud. Your therapist specializes in the unique emotional and psychological challenges of the perinatal period and understands that what you are going through is not a choice or a character flaw. Together, you will develop coping strategies for managing mood and anxiety, strengthen your bond with your baby, process the identity shift that comes with parenthood, and begin to feel like yourself again. Therapy can also include your partner, helping them understand what you are going through and how to support you.

Evidence-Based Care

Our Treatment Approach

Our perinatal mental health treatment is specifically tailored to the needs of this unique period. Perinatal-Focused CBT addresses the anxious and depressive thought patterns that are common in new parents. Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) helps you navigate the relationship changes that come with parenthood — with your partner, your family, and your sense of self. Mother-Infant Bonding Therapy strengthens the attachment between you and your baby through guided interaction. Mindfulness-based approaches help you manage the overwhelming moments with greater calm and presence. When appropriate, we coordinate with your OB-GYN or midwife and psychiatric providers to ensure you receive comprehensive, coordinated care.
